In 1928, the Essex County Park Commission purchased 111 acres of mostly farmland for the establishment of a new park and the town of Montclair also transferred an additional 11 acres to the Commission to develop what would become Brookdale Park.
Keep Nature in Mind, Sustainable Fall Gardening
When the weather cools and leaves begin to fall we itch to “put the garden to bed”, a practice that needs updating. In the park's native plant gardens, we garden sustainably. Translating this into your home garden will help make sure your plants, insects, butterflies and animals overwinter safely.
These fall gardening tips are inspired by Doug Tallamy, conservationist, author, and professor at the University of Delaware. He writes that nature's best hope is for each of us to practice conservation in our own yards.
