FALL FAMILY FUN ACTIVITIES

Find adventure right in your own backyard!

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK

Grab the kids and head outdoors into your backyard, front yard or around the neighborhood. Even though the colorful summer flowers are beginning to fade, there is still a lot of activity in your garden in the fall.  Use a magnifying glass to explore your garden with your children and you may be surprised at what you find.

Things to look for:

•           Insects
•           Seeds and Nuts
•           Leaves & Branches
•           Different Colors

Your children may be interested in sorting the objects by size or color, or maybe they'll just want to make a brush pile!

You may want to use this activity to kick off constructing a brush pile in a less used area of your garden.  It is simple and fun to do and will provide many opportunities for you and your children to observe wildlife.

Either way, have fun exploring!

BRUSH PILE RECIPE

As you build the pile, keep it loose so that creatures can find a home and make some bigger openings for birds/animals to go in and out

1.      Lay down a bed of fallen leaves

2.      Pile branches on top of the leaves

3.      Add twigs on top of the branches

4.      Add more leaves and stems such as frosted vegetable or flower stalks

5.      Add more leaves on top

6.      Add any branches twigs, frosted plants you find during the season

7.      Feel free to add old potting soil from your container garden

RECOMMENDED READING

One of our favorite books to read with the kiddos is “Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt” by Kate Messner. It is a wonderful story of the activity going on both above and below ground in a garden all year.
