Help restore a hidden park gem by cleaning up "The Overlook" this coming Saturday, June 28 from 10:00am-12noon. Named by the Olmsted Brothers, this area is central to the park and features a naturally occurring spring and rock outcropping. In recent years, it has become overgrown with invasive plant species and the adjacent rock lined creek bed is currently filled with sediment and debris. Join us in making this scenic area enjoyable again for park goers of all ages!
Whether it is because you have a sense of duty to protect the park or are just looking for a great excuse to work outdoors with friendly people, you can make a tremendous difference by coming out, cutting back and digging in with fellow park volunteers.
Families with children ages 6 and up are welcome provided that accompanying parents are attentive and prepared for muddy conditions.
Wear: Shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting muddy. Long pants and a long sleeved shirt is not required but is recommended if you are concerned about getting scratched by branches.
Bring: Gardening/work gloves. If you have them, bringing extra shovels and hand trowels would be useful. Applying sun protection and mosquito repellant probably isn't a bad idea either. If you have them, please bring hand saws, hand pruners and lopers. Some shovels and wheelbarrows will be provided due to a generous gift from Viacom's Viacommunity program.
Place: The Overlook. Located at the center of the park, across from playground where a natural spring and rock outcropping are hidden beneath overgrown brush. If time permits, we'll also work around the area just south of the Overlook which is known as the Rock Garden.
Rest assured, we will have a number of horticulturally knowledgable volunteers on site to identify all plant species that we are working around to ensure that we do not harm or remove any that are considered beneficial to the park landscape or wildlife.
